Goodbye to Sumiya Orchard Central

Remember that time I talked about the super awesome Mixed Bara Kaisen Don at Sumiya? We are back again for more incredible lunch deal, hoping to share more yummy food with everyone!

orchard-sumiya-counter sumiya-fresh-fish-sashimiorchard-sumiya-interiorsumiya-seats

But little did we expect that the Mixed Bara Kaisen Don that we love is gone. 😭😭😭

Can you imagine just 2 months ago we found our new favourite! And it is so awesome! Now you realise that it is gone?

And it is so awesome! Now you realise that it is gone?

Sadly, Sumiya have changed their menu since January😱 We were really disappointed by the new menu 😔

Sumiya’s New MenuSumiya-new-menu

Sumiya’s Old Menusumiya-old-menu

Let’s just do a price comparison between the two menus.

The price seems pretty much similar on first sight. But after comparing, we found the new menu pricier. The Old Mixed Bara Kaisen Don Set cost $20.80 and the New Kaisen Bara Truffle Don ala carte is $20 and in a set meal cost $26.80.

The new menu is more expensive.

Old $20.80 VS New $26.80

This is pretty much expected, right? Everything is getting more and more expensive nowadays.

We ordered the food hoping that more expensive means better.

Typical Singaporean Mentality: Expensive = Better

So we proceed on with our order to try if it is worth our 💰!

Hokkai Sashimi Mori Truffle Don – $24  (Alacarte)

Combination of sweet prawn sashimi, snow crab meat, chopped salmon sashimi and salmon roe on sushi rice topped with okaka bonito flakes, truffle paste

Pork Garlic Sauce Sumibi-yaki & Chicken Kara-age Don – $23 (Alacarte)

We were shocked when the food was served. The portion of the rice bowl was mini, it was so tiny that we didn’t know how to start eating it!

Let’s says size doesn’t matter. How about the quality of the food?

The rice was different from the ordinary white Japanese rice. It was well marinated and tasty. The sashimi in Hokkai Sashimi Mori Truffle Don ($24) was all chopped into fine pieces which we didn’t really enjoy. Not shoik at all. This is really disappointing. The other food we tried was the Pork Garlic Sauce Sumibi-yaki & Chicken Kara-age Don($23). Okay no different in size of bowl from Hokkai Sashimi Mori Truffle Don. Probably slightly better with more ingredients. There are 4 slices of pork and 3 pieces of Chicken Kara-age. Again, the bowl was small but the ratio of rice to ingredient was more acceptable as the size of each piece of meat was decent.  The chicken tasted the smell as the CP chicken you get from NTUC, luckily the pork tasted better! It was juicy and well marinated with garlic sauce. The tender and savoury pork made this meal a little more comforting.

Okay from the photo it may not look as small I sound. But trust me it’s a really different compared with the Old Mixed Bara Kaisen Don. Just look at the one below and you will feel our pain.

Old Mixed Bara Kaisen Don

We also ordered the Chawanmushi.

Super Mini Chawanmushi as well!

Fake Smile.  Not his real feeling.

The Chawanmushi seems to also have shrunk. It came in a small cup which was like 3 fingers in height. We wondered if we travelled into the dwarf world with everything served in such small portion.

Super-duper sad la. Where is the affordable and delicious Mixed Bara Kaisen Don that we love? What happen to the Sumiya we love?

This is his real expression. Emo because of Sumiya’s New Menu

So, we went to Sumiya’s Facebook page and realise there’s many people that were disappointed with the new menu just like us.

Super sad boy. Nicholas also expressed his disappointment on Sumiya’s Facebook.

Can we have the Old Mixed Bara Kaisen Don back? 😅

Another sad news for everyone would be Sumiya Orchard Central will be closing on 25 Feb.

“What? Close?! Why?”

No Business

We thought it was quite popular since it was quite busy and popular when i visit during lunch hour.

Possible Reason: High rental cost at orchard central💰

However don’t worry, you can still visit them at the other shop at:

Sumiya (Suntec City)
Address: #03-332 Suntec City, 3 Temasek Blvd, 332 Suntec City, Singapore 038983
Phone: 6235 1816
Hours: Open daily · 11:30AM–3PM, 5:30–10PM

We were really looking forward to our lunch at sumiya only to realise it was no longer the same. 😭

We hope that they can come out with another new menu with the old chirashi don!

Do set your expectation lower to avoid disappointment😂

I love to explore new adventure and eat yummy food.

Tori-paitan Style Ramen Preview by Kuro-Obi x IPPUDO @ MBS

kuro obi ramen

There will be another makan option in Marina Bay Sands real soon! IPPUDO is going to open not 1 but 2 stores near the ice-skating rink area of MBS. Other than IPPUDO’s new outlet, they are going to open a new concept stall which is a quick-service takeaway ramen bar Kuro-Obi.

Kuro-Obi uses tori-paitan in their signature ramen and we are fortunate enough to have a taste of this ramen before it opens in MBS this coming 13th Jan 2017. So is it worth your calories? Let’s check it out!

kuro obi ippudo

We have a taste of Kuro-Obi at our favourite IPPUDO outlet @ Mandarin Gallery. Lucky! 🍀🍀🍀

Chicken Soup Base

kuro obi ramen

Tori-paitan is a ramen style which uses chicken soup base and have chicken chashu. It is different from the more common tonkotsu style which uses pork instead.

LOL! Tori-paitan sounds really like tori hard to earn in hokkien! 😂

Just the Right Texture

kuro obi ramen noodle

As usual like IPPUDO, you can choose the noodle texture. The ramen is just nice, not too soft and not too hard. The springy ramen texture goes well with the chicken soup which has smooth rich chicken flavor. The soup tastes almost like the soup in beauty collagen hot pot ‘BIJIN NABE’.

Chicken Chashu

kuro obi ramen chashu

The chicken chashu tastes almost like pork chashu but less chewy! For me, I still prefer pork chashu!

Flowy Tamago

kuro obi ramen egg

Next up is the must-have tamago! Nice well-flavored soft egg white with flowing egg york! Shiok!

kuro obi ippudo bowl

Since Kuro-Obi is a takeaway ramen concept, it will be served in takeaway containers. However, I do really like the bowl they used for this ramen in IPPUDO!

The ramen in Obi-Wan, opps too much star wars. 😜

This ramen in Kuro-Obi @ MBS will be selling from $8 onwards and that is pretty decent price consider the location and type of food! Therefore, if you have too much tonkotsu style ramen and craving for a twist, then you should try out Kuro-Obi! Hopefully, this outlet will maintain the quality like I ate here in IPPUDO. 🙏🙏🙏

Which side do you choose? chicken or pork based ramen? Comment below now! 😊

Authentic Bara Chirashi Don at Sumiya

Being Sashimi lovers, our search for Chirashi Don never ends!

Here we are today at Sumiya for Chirashi Don!

orchard-sumiya-interior orchard-sumiya-counter

cute chef posing at the camera

Sumiya’s Signatures Kaisen Bara Don – $20.80++

Mixed Bara Kaisen Don set lunch comes with salad with sesame dressing, chawanmushi, miso soup, peanut sauce, crispy salmon appetizer, mocha and pickles.

Is this The Most Gorgeous Chirashi Don you’ve seen?

It really tasted as good as it looked!

Luxuriously thick Chunk of fresh marinated cubed fish such as Maguro Akami (lean tuna), Chutoro, Toro, Amberjack, Salmon and Avocado.

The Mixed Bara Kaisen Don at Sumiya Charcoal Grill Izakaya was awesome for us! As usual, Japanese food is usually very expensive, this generous bowl of Chirashi was worth our money! A bowl of Kaisen Bara Don is filling enough for 2 persons to share. We love it!

Another favourite Chirashi Don in Somerset:  TANUKI RAW AT ORCHARD CENTRAL

We spotted the fried cheese stick displayed in the lift of Orchard central and decides to try it! This is inside the special menu and not found on the main menu.

Fried Cheese in Rice Paper – $5.80

We weren’t wowed by this, the cheese was too little and it does not ooze out like mozzarella cheese.

I guess sticking with Sashimi dishes is still the best!

Cheese and corn fillings wrapped in fried rice paper.

We had an enjoyable lunch at Sumiya Japanese especially the Mix Bara Kaisen Don! We recommend you to check out Sumiya during lunch time as there is set lunch price!

Try it and tell us what do you think about the food here?

Ice cold bingu 빙수 at The Ice Lab

Merry Christmas!

While we can’t experience snow in Singapore, Ice Lab Cafe can offer you the snowy feeling! Escape from the sweltering heat and enjoy ice cold bingu 빙수 at The Ice Lab, Somerset.

Spacious white simple décor and its signature snow bear with ‘snow falling’ in the middle!

When Ice Lab first open, it caught our attention when we walked past. Wow! This place is beautiful! However, it was usually crowded and packed so ended up giving it a miss! Today, we finally decided to try out ice lab! And surprisingly, it was quite empty! Perhaps the craze is dying down!

The most interesting experience here is not the food, but the ambience. It’s simple with minimalistic décor.

Stepping in Ice Lab feels like entering into another world, one that is happier, freer, and cooler!

The Menu Ice-lab-orchard-menu

So many types of bingsu from milo, green tea, yogurt, Oreo, strawberry, cheese and more!

How to choose! I wish I could have everything!

Alternatively, you can order pizza, toast, or a slice of cake. My assumption is that majority of the people here will go for the popular bingsoo that ice lab specialises in!

Here comes my Atas Ice Kachang – Korean Yogurt Bingsoo!

Since we didn’t have any flavour in mind, we decided to go with a neutral flavour.

Yogurt BingSoo serves with a mixture of strawberry slices, blueberries, frosties corn flakes, and a hidden scoop of berry ice cream in the middle.

Yogurt Bingsoo ($16.90)

So how different was Ice Lab from the usual bingsu?

The yogurt taste great, not too sour or sweet! The milky ice shaving was so fine! We found ice lab bingsoo to be more refined and milky than other shops like O’ma spoon and Nunsonyee. It was instantly refreshing when the soft fluffy shave ice melts in your mouth! When we were reaching the end, we discovered a scoop of berry flavoured ice cream hidden at the bottom! I felt that the cornflake doesn’t go well with the bingsu as it was a bit over contrasting such that you have to bite the cornflake while the shaved ice melts in your mouth. Didn’t really enjoy having this combination of corn flake with the finely shaved ice. We will try other flavours next time!

The Outside

The storefront is covered with transparent glass so every time we walked past, we will tend to feel that the people inside are very ‘atas’(high class/rich). Because one bowl of bingsoo is around $14 to $17 at Ice Lab, I can get almost get a decent bowl of ramen or chirashi bowl!

Overall, I love the bingsoo as well as the unique atmosphere at Ice Lab. Still, we cannot deny that it is overpriced for a bowl of shaved ice with basic ingredients (strawberry, blueberry, cornflake) at $16.90. Ouch that hurts! Not worth leh!

Cheap Trill!

For a cheaper alternative of Ice Lab BingSoo, you can go for the takeaway bingsoo at the Bugis OutletIce-Lab-Bugis-Singapore Ice-Lab-Bugis-Takeaway

Have yet to try the takeaway Bingsoo! Would try it next time!

How did you find the Bingsoo at Ice Lab?

Affordable Japanese Fusion Set Lunch at Tanuki Raw

Time to satisfy our craving! This time we came to Tanuki Raw which combines the best of food quality, value, and service!

If you have not tried Tanuki Raw, you really need to!

Open concept bar seats where you can observe the preparation of your food and beverage!

Let’s look at the menu!

Lunch time menu available from 11:30-3:00pm.

The Menu

If you are feeling healthy, you can switch your rice bowl to a hearty salad base mix of romaine lettuce, butter lettuce & cherry tomatoes with ginger dressing.

Lunch Set Add-Ons +$2 (miso soup, green salad, green tea)

We ordered the Tanuki Kaisen Chirashi, Foie Gras Truffle Yakiniku and Salted Duck Egg Char Siew!

Weekdays like this, seriously I wish every day was like this!

Tanuki Kaisen Chirashi

Being sashimi lover, nothing will stop us from ordering this bowl of Chirashi! All the goodness in a bowl, Tanuki Kaisen Chirashi ($22.90) is specially designed for the sashimi lovers! Enjoy a generous amount of fresh sashimi heaped over a bed or salad or rice! Uni, Tuna, Negitoro, Salmon Sashimi, Aburi Salmon Belly, Scallop, Sea Bream, Sword Fish, White Tuna, Yellow Tail, Ikura, Tamaho and Ebiko over yummy Tanuki’s Signature Mixed Rice.

Foie Gras Truffle Yakiniku

Besides sashimi, we also ordered the Foie Gras Truffle Yakiniku ($19.90) which is also my favourite dish!

The combination of Pan-Seared Fatty Foie Gras and US Black Angus Short Ribs with Onsen Egg, Truffle Soy is heavenly!

Foie gras is pan-seared to perfection, immersed into a flavour that tastes like ‘char siew sauce’, and melts in your mouth!

Black Garlic Brown Butter with onsen egg over Tanuki’s Signature Mixed Rice made the rice tastier!!

That is the PERFECT ONSEN EGG! Tanuki oozy onsen egg never fails! Oh gosh, the egg was simply amazing!

Salted Duck Egg Char Siew

We also tried the Salted Duck Egg Char Siew ($15.90) which is consist Tender Seasoned Japanese Nagano Pork Belly Char Siew, Onsen Egg, Mixed Mushroom, and Golden Salted Duck Egg Hollandaise over Sushi Rice. So-so only. I didn’t really like this but my mum like it. The salted duck egg hollandaise sauce was a little lacking. This dish was less flavourful as compared to the rest.

We love Tanuki Raw for its variety of delicious and interesting Japanese fusion cuisine! Tanuki Raw have been consistent with their standards and always deliver the same good taste! The taste and portion is definitely value for our money!

Before we left, we voted which was our personal favourite!

Grace Mummy: I choose the Salted Duck Egg Char Siew!

Candyce: I like Tanuki Kaisen Chirashi!

Me: My fav is the Foie Gras Truffle Yakiniku!

We couldn’t decide which was best because they each of them are unique in its own way! HAHA So it’s for you to try!

HAHA So it’s for you to try!

Comment below and let me know which is your favourite dish!

We will definitely be coming back for more!

Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roasters @ Upper Thomson

Located at Upper Thomson Road, Pacamara is a simplistic boutique brunch café. Some people may recognised it as the white café in Upper Thomson because the white exterior simply stands out from other shops.

We have been planning to try out the food at Pacamara café for a long time but weekends are always over so quickly. After seeing so many photos on Instagram, finally, we manage to wake up for a weekend brunch at Pacamara!

So here we are in PACAMARA!

The wide variety of food left us so spoilt for choices! We want to try everything on the menu! Salmon Mentaiko Benedict ($19.50) was first on our list as we love Salmon!! We also ordered the Steak and Egg ($19.90).

Here comes our food! Happy and excited faces! Ready to try out the food! Let’s tuck in!

But wait, photo first!

Salmon Mentaiko Benedict & Steak and Egg

Egg benedict never ever goes wrong! Surely enough, this dish did not fail us! Lots of richness packed in one plate – free range poached egg with mentaiko sauce and spinach lies beautifully on smoked salmon with brioche toast. The poached egg was perfectly executed, it did nicely oozed out! The steak and egg was average, nothing too fancy. 150grams ribeye steak with potatoes topped with sour cream, free range poached egg and Chives Hollandaise. The poach eggs mixed well with the Salmon and the Steak. Yummy!

Salmon Mentaiko Benedict

We enjoyed the food and atmosphere here at Pacamara. However, we realised that the seating arrangement may not be suitable for small groups as most of the tables here are big, long one. If you only have 2 people, you may end up sitting in-between others making it harder to talk and share food. We will be back to try other food the next time!

TGIF! It’s time for some sweet family time on Friday!

Having dessert makes you feel more chill and happy, don’t you agree?

And ironically,

We are here at Hvala Waffle Bar, located at 313 Somerset B3.

Hvala is quite a unique name and it actually has a meaning to it!

‘Hvala’ means ‘thank you’ in Croatia.

Hvala Waffle Bar

Presentation of Toppings

Hvala’s Menu

Honestly, the menu wasn’t very well designed. It was pretty misleading on the first sight. We had no idea how to order, we felt like clowns asking how do we order and the lady just pass to us the menu. Feels a bit unwelcomed initially but subsequently she explained to us.

The egglet waffle known as the Puffle (menu: bottom right) is an add-on (+$3) to any of the parfait or soft serve. To have the complete set of soft serve parfait with Puffle, you need to first choose the parfait/ soft serve then add on the Puffle.

Part two of our decision-making crisis. We also have difficulties in deciding which parfait as there are certain toppings in each creation that we don’t like. Sigh. I wish they allowed us to customise and choose our topping which they have it on their old menu. For example, 5 topping for a certain price like llaollao or other shops. Not sure why they changed it. So finally, we decided to try the ‘Bella’ as the lady boss told us it is more popular and more chocolaty. But still, it contains azuki which I do not like and banana which Candyce doesn’t like. But it’s okay, let’s try it!

Toppings delicately prepared using the blowtorch!

It took awhile before it was ready to serve!

Bella Parfait with Puffle

Belle Parfait ($7.80) has an assortment of vanilla/ green tea soft serve, azuki, peanut hazelnut spread, caramelised banana, crushed pistachio, and almond chocolate stick.

And not forgetting the Puffle add-on ($3), which means the complete set of soft serve parfait with Puffle cost $10.80!

Holding this Belle Parfait with Puffle (Egglet Waffle) feels dangerous, I was afraid it would topple!

Super instagramable, it looks really good and we could see people peeping, eyeing and wowing at our ‘Hvala’ dessert!

In dire need of a refreshing cold treat especially when the weather these days are so humid and hot!

Can’t stand how cute this Popo of mine is! Who says dessert is only for youngsters! Popo is ready to eat!

The Puffle (egglet waffle) was pretty good with a whiff of buttermilk fragrance! No need to go Hong Kong to eat egglets waffle, but will still buy it if I’m in Hong Kong cause it’s cheap and delicious! Back to the Puffle, it is not as hollow as the Hong Kong one but it meets the point of crisp on the outside and fluffy on the side kind of texture! Oh, forget to say, after deciding which parfait creation, you can choose the flavour of soft serve: Vanilla or Green tea. And the sauce for Puffle: Chocolate, Maple Syrup, Nutella, Speculoos Cookie. Our Choice was Green Tea Soft Serve and Puffle with Speculoos Cookie Sauce! The Speculoos Cookie Sauce obviously makes everything taste better! A bit messy when it comes to eating the Puffle with the soft serve! It’s either you bite it directly or using you hand to pluck and savour them one by one! The matcha soft serve was creamy, delivering a smooth taste with a slight bitterness, not overly sweet and doesn’t melts too quickly! Overall, taste not bad lah! Would recommend you to share if you are trying!

HOSHINO COFFEE @ Plaza Singapura

Hoshino Coffee

The best 3 mains are:

  • Lobster Bisque Soup Spaghetti $16
  • “Hoshino” Pot-Baked Curry Rice – $15
  • “Omu Rice” & Angus Beef Steak Plate – $18.80 (New item! 4th Anniversary Menu)

Lobster Bisque Soup Spaghetti ($16)

This plate of spaghetti served in creamy lobster bisque base never fails to satisfy us! Out of these 3 dishes, this is our favourite! We order it everytime we are at Hoshino Coffee! It is served with lobster bisque soup but not the lobster itself! The lobster bisque base was incredibly delicious and rich. Just the way we like it! The pasta portion was huge and it would definitely taste nicer when you share it with 2-3 person!

“Hoshino” Pot-Baked Curry Rice ($15)

I am impressed how this simple dish could taste so yummy! Served piping hot on a sizzling hotplate with basic ingredients of sausage, broccoli, cheese and a semi-molten egg. The curry was so sweet and fragrant. Every spoon that enters my mouth was so flavourful!

hoshino pot baked curry rice

“Omu Rice” & Angus Beef Steak Plate ($18.80)

“Omu Rice” & Angus Beef Steak Plate with Salad is a new creation to celebration the 4th anniversary in Singapore! YES! Hoshino has just turned 4! This plate has the best combination of both the tender juicy beef and tomato omelette rice!  The angus beef steak is served in medium rare, pinkish in the middle. DON’T THAT LOOK APPETIZING? (try not to drool!)

hoshino omu rice angus beef steak

Caramel Nuts French Toast ($10.80)

This softly baked French Toast is served with homemade Whipped Cream & Maple Syrup. We would recommend you to add on softee (+$1:20) as the big scoop of ‘ice cream’ you see below is actually their homemade whipped cream.

hoshino french toast caramel nuts

Pancake Soufflé with Chocolate Ganache Sauce ($16.80)

Pancake soufflé are Hoshino Coffee’s best-selling dessert and we were really looking forward to our plate of fluffy, freshly baked soufflé pancake. This is the countless time eating the soufflé pancake but sad to say, the standard has dropped significantly. When we tried it for the first time, the soufflé was so delicious and it melts into our stomach within a few minutes. Came with high expectation, left disappointed. The soufflé pancake doesn’t taste good anymore. It’s no longer light and fluffy inside and crispy on the outside. We gave them our feedback and really hope that they can serve better soufflé.

Hoshino souffle double pancake chocolate

Honesty, we love Hoshino Coffee and wouldn’t hesitate to dine here again. But the food certainly wasn’t as good as before. I really hope they can deliver consistent quality food to avoid disappointment.

Tips: Soufflé Pancake takes around 20-30 minutes, order them together with your mains!

Matcha Tea Shingen Mochi by Yokosuka Curry House

How does raindrop taste like?

Hidden in the corner of Johor Bahru City Square, we tried the famous Mizu Shingen Mochi aka Japanese water mochi raindrop cake from Yokosuka Curry House. It’s available in two flavors original and green tea. The green tea Mizu Shingen Mochi was served with peanut crunch and Matcha sauce surrounding it. The jelly was crystal clear and resembles a water droplet. Indeed, the jelly was jiggly, wobbly, QQ and refreshing! I felt that the jelly could be tastier, the matcha sauce was sweet enough and went very well with the jelly. I didn’t find it very impressive but it’s pretty nice though.

Try it and comment on how you find this special Japanese jelly!

Located at Mount Austin, Johor, ‘Atlas Coffee Embassy’ is a simple and elegant café which served delicious brunch all day. However, we were quite disappointed with the availability of food on the menu. Craving for the egg benedict, we came to found that they ran out with hollandaise sauce to prepare the egg benedict. Nonetheless, they offer great food and drinks, and their staff are exceptionally friendly and polite. Feel free to ask them for recommendation on the food and even drinks!

Mozzarella Cheese Stick

Very satisfied boy here posing with the cheese stick! The Mozzarella Cheese Stick (RM19.90) served with in house special dipping was delicious! Ooey gooey mozzarella cheese covered with perfectly fried crispy golden skin.

French Toast

atlas french toast

Three slices of brioche bun topped with homemade caramelized banana garnish with free fruit which cost RM21.90.

The texture of the French toast was cooked perfectly, not too soft or too hard! The caramelized banana caught my attention as you can eat it with the skin!

Smoked Salmon Triplet Omelette

atlas smoked salmon triplet omelette

Hearty three eggs omelette with couple slices of smoke salmon, onions, tomatoes and sautéed spinach. (RM24.90) The smoked salmon was chopped a little too tiny to be tasted.

Waffle with Chocolate Banana

atlas waffle with chocolate banana

Waffle served with ice cream, banana and fresh food RM22.90

The waffle wasn’t bad, just wasn’t that great either. The waffle was less crispy and a little too floury. The maple syrup went very well with the waffle!
